gecko, (suborder Gekkota), any of more than 1,000 species of lizards making up six families of the suborder Gekkota. Geckos are mostly small, usually nocturnal reptiles with a soft skin. They also possess a short stout body, a large head, and typically well-developed limbs. The ends of each limb are often equipped with digits possessing adhesive pads. Most of the species are 3 to 15 cm (1.2 to 6 inches) long, including tail length (about half the total). They have adapted to habitats ranging from deserts to jungles. Some species frequent human habitations, and most feed on insects.Geckos are spread across six families: Carphodactylidae, Diplodactylidae, Eublepharidae, Gekkonidae, Phyllodactylidae, and Sphaerodactylidae. Of these, the eublepharids—a group that includes the banded geckos (Coleonyx) of the southwestern United States, the cat geckos (Aleuroscalabotes) of Indonesia and the Malay Peninsula, and others—have movable eyelids.

day geckoDay gecko (genus Phelsuma).(more)gecko; toe fansThe toe fans of a fan-footed gecko (Ptyodactylus hasselquistii).(more)Most geckos have feet modified for climbing. The pads of their long toes are covered with small plates that are in turn covered with numerous tiny hairlike processes that are forked at the end. These microscopic hooks cling to small surface irregularities, enabling geckos to climb smooth and vertical surfaces and even to run across smooth ceilings. Some geckos also have retractable claws. In their efforts to avoid predators, geckos appear to be fast enough to sprint across the surface of a water body without sinking. Although this ability has been shown in only one species, the flat-tailed house gecko (Hemidactylus platyurus), herpetologists argue that many other geckos may also possess it.Like snakes, most geckos have a clear protective covering over the eyes. The pupils of common nocturnal species are vertical and are often lobed in such a manner that they close to form four pinpoints. A gecko’s tail may be long and tapering, short and blunt, or even globular. The tail serves in many species as a storehouse of fat upon which the animal can draw during unfavourable conditions. The tail may also be extremely fragile and if detached is quickly regenerated in its original shape. Unlike other reptiles, most geckos have a voice, the call differing with the species and ranging from a feeble click or chirp to a shrill cackle or bark. Most species are oviparous, the eggs being white and hard-shelled and usually laid beneath the bark of trees or attached to the underside of leaves. A few species in New Zealand give birth to live young.

Mediterranean geckoMediterranean gecko (Hemidactylus turcicus).(more)Geckos are abundant throughout the warm areas of the world, and at least a few species occur on all continents except Antarctica. Geckos’ colours are usually drab, with grays, browns, and dirty whites predominating, though Phelsuma, a genus made up of the day geckos of Madagascar, is bright green and active in the daytime. The banded gecko (Coleonyx variegatus), the most widespread native North American species, grows to 15 cm (6 inches) and is pinkish to yellowish tan with darker bands and splotches. The tokay gecko (Gekko gecko), native to Southeast Asia, is the largest species, attaining a length of 25 to 35 cm (10 to 14 inches). It is gray with red and whitish spots and bands and is frequently sold in pet shops. George R. Zug The Editors of Encyclopaedia Britannica

WebkitWebkit(Safari内核,Chrome内核原型,开源):它是苹果公司自己的内核,也是苹果的Safari浏览器使用的内核。 WebkitWebkit(Safari内核,Chrome内核原型,开源):它是苹果公司自己的内核,也是苹果的Safari浏览器使用的内核。

Gecko为第2个最流行的排版引擎,仅次于Trident(用于Windows版的Internet Explorer)。

Mozilla

Firefox OS

Frequently Asked Questions

Geckos are usually small to medium sized lizards that are native to the warmer parts of the world. There are over 1,600 different species of geckos but not all of them are commonly kept as pets. The geckos that are most often kept as pets are usually under a foot long and have lifespans between 10 and 20 years. Because of their small size and long lifespan, geckos have become very popular pets but their care can still vary some between species.

Popular Pet Gecko Species

A handful of gecko species have grown in popularity as pets:

Leopard geckos

Tokay geckos

Day geckos

African fat-tailed geckos

Crested geckos

Common house geckos

There are of course many other types of geckos both in the wild and as pets but these other species are not as commonly seen as the aforementioned.

The Spruce / Adrienne Legault

Choosing a Gecko

If you want a pet gecko, it's best to acquire a captive-bred one from a reputable breeder. If you take in a wild-caught gecko you won't know what diseases or ailments it may be carrying. Look for a gecko that has clear eyes, skin without dry patches, all its fingers, toes, and its tail, as well as a healthy appetite.

Gecko Behavior

Even though there are many kinds of geckos, some of them have similar temperaments and exhibit similar behaviors. For the most part, geckos are pleasant, docile pets but most of them prefer not to be handled by humans too frequently as it can be stressful for them.

Activity: Most geckos, including the popular leopard geckos, crested geckos, tokay geckos, and African fat-tailed geckos, are nocturnal so they will be most active at night but there are some species of geckos that are active during the day, including the aptly named day gecko.

Vocalizations: They're not terribly vocal but some geckos make noises such as chirping, barking, and clicking when they are defending their territory or attracting a mate. Most of the time geckos are completely silent.

Temperament: Geckos are not usually aggressive reptiles unless two males are housed together. Because of this, it's best to separate male geckos since they may attack each other with little warning. It's rare for a gecko to bite a person but there are some species that are more likely to do so, such as the tokay gecko.

Housing a Gecko

Care requirements will vary some from species to species but for the most part, geckos need to be kept in enclosures that have branches available for climbing, a water bowl, a hiding place, and secure lids. Geckos can escape through small holes so an aquarium with a tight fitting lid is recommended for housing geckos. Most geckos only require a 10 or 20 gallon aquarium since they are small reptiles but larger species will need more space.

To line your gecko's cage, use a substrate such as coconut husk or orchid bark, both of which retain moisture and will not be harmful to your gecko if ingested in small amounts. Paper towels and newspaper can also be used but some concerns with the bleaching and dying of these paper products lead reptile owners to more natural options.

The Spruce / Adrienne Legault

Heating and Humidity for Geckos

The ideal temperature range for most geckos is between 70 and 90 degrees but some require higher basking temperature areas into the 100's. These high temperatures are achieved through the use of heat lights and heating pads. A proper temperature gradient should be provided in the appropriate temperature range for the specific species of gecko you are caring for. This typically means one side of the enclosure will be in the 70's while the other side will be in the 90's or 100's.

For nocturnal species, no UVB-emitting bulbs are typically necessary but gecko species that are active during the day will need this special light. UVB rays are invisible but very important to the growth, appetite, and activity of many reptiles.

Many different kinds of bulbs exist for UVB, heat, and light and some may be more appropriate for your specific kind of gecko than others. But regardless of what bulbs you choose, a proper day and night cycle should be followed to illuminate the enclosure. White light, even if it isn't providing heat or UVB rays, needs to be visible during the day or your gecko may become stressed and confused.

Humidity in a gecko's enclosure should be kept between 70 and 80 percent. Misting the enclosure with water is the most common method of achieving this percentage but providing a large water bowl will also help. A hygrometer can be used to measure how humid a gecko enclosure is.

Feeding Geckos

Most geckos do not eat plants or vegetables so live insects are something you must be comfortable with if you want to have a gecko. There are several insect options and some are preferred by different gecko species over the others. The most commonly fed types of insects are:

MealwormsCricketsSuperwormsWaxworms

Crickets and mealworms are usually the staple diets of geckos with the superworms and waxworms being more of a treat. Some gecko species do eat fruit and they are often given a formulated diet to meet their specific nutritional needs. Feeding regimens will vary based on the age and species of the gecko and may be daily or weekly.

Prior to feeding a gecko, the insects must be fed a nutritious diet. This will gut-load the insects so that they can provide better nutrition to the gecko. Calcium powder should also be dusted onto the insects intermittently to supplement the gecko with this mineral.

The Spruce / Adrienne Legault

Handling Geckos

Never grab a gecko by the tail as they will often drop their tails (a natural defense against predators). However, if this should happen there is no need to panic. It will grow back although it may have a different shape and/or color. The gecko should be well fed and ideally separated from any cage mates until the tail has regrown.

Common Gecko Health Problems

Geckos are not immune to health problems. Some of the most commonly seen ailments include:

Stomatitis - Also called mouth rot, stomatitis is as gross as it sounds and needs to be treated as early as possible. You'll notice a reddish discoloration around the gecko's mouth and possibly some pus which looks like cottage cheese.Respiratory issues - A gecko that is wheezing or drooling may have a respiratory infection. These are usually caused from a draft or low temperatures in the enclosure.Parasites - Both internal and external, geckos also are frequently afflicted with parasitic infections. Worms and microscopic eggs may be in the feces and small mites may be on the surface of the skin. Parasitic infections on the skin will look like a red rash or you may notice your gecko has difficulty shedding while internal parasites can cause sluggishness, changes in appetite, and unusual droppings. Dysecdysis - This fancy word for problems shedding is a big problem for geckos who do not have proper humidity in their enclosures.

CRISPR gRNA

CRISPR gRNA

A文库还包含针对miRNA的gRNA(每个miRNA有4个gRNA)。

Sanjana N.E.,Shalem O.,Zhang F. Improved vectors and genome-wide libraries for CRISPR screening. Nat Methods. 2014 Aug;11(8):783-4. doi:10.1038/nmeth.3047.

CRISPR/Cas9 SAM

These adorable little lizards come in a variety of shapes, sizes, and colors. With over 1,500 species, you’re sure to find lots of unique traits. Read on to learn about the gecko. Description of the GeckoGeckos are nocturnal reptiles with large eyes (the better to see you with!), and padded toes for climbing. They have a thick tail and four legs. Geckos can be seen in a truly diverse variety of shapes, colors, and sizes.Interesting Facts About the Gecko These extremely adaptable creatures possess numerous traits that allow them to thrive in many different habitats. With so many different species, the facts are virtually endless, so we’ll pick a few choice ones.Wink at Em’ – Your gecko friend will never wink at you, because geckos cannot blink! Instead of blinking to clear their eyes, geckos simply lick debris away. They use their tongues to keep their eyes moist and clean.Off With His Head! – While geckos can’t regrow their heads, they can regrow their tails. Geckos can actually sever their own tails if captured, to distract the predator and escape. The tail simply grows back, in a process called “autotomy.”Mega-Gecko – The largest species of gecko ever discovered was a whopping two feet long! This now-extinct species, the kawekaweau, was native to New Zealand. It is believed these geckos were driven to extinction by the introduction of non-native rats and weasels. This fate is unfortunately very common in island animal species with little-to-no native predators.Gecko Toes – Geckos’ padded toes provide them with unrivaled climbing ability. Approximately 60% of geckos have toe pads aiding them in climbing. The toes have setae, or ridges, along the surface. Scientists have debated over the exact science of how gecko toes allow them to climb virtually any surface. The most recent theory is the use of electrostatic interaction between the toes and the surface.Habitat of the GeckoGeckos reside in a number of different habitats worldwide. They can be found in urban areas, living within houses and near light fixtures, in forests within the trees, or even deserts and mountains.Distribution of the GeckoThese reptiles can be found on every continent in the world, except for Antarctica.Diet of the GeckoGeckos feed on a variety of insects, fruits, and even the nectar of flowers. They are nocturnal, meaning they are most active at night. Geckos can frequently be found near light sources, feeding on insects attracted to the light.Gecko and Human InteractionWith over 1,500 species, geckos interact with humans quite frequently. While some people find them scary, the vast majority of people see them as harmless. Many individuals will welcome geckos into their homes, as the geckos will feed on unwanted insects, like mosquitos and cockroaches.Geckos are susceptible to the same anthropogenic (human-caused) dangers as many other animals. Pollution, deforestation, invasive species, and global climate change can impact many different species of geckos.DomesticationLeopard geckos have been partially domesticated. They have been selectively bred over 30 years to be friendlier, and less likely to drop their tails. Humans have also used selective breeding to isolate color morphs that are desirable.Does the Gecko Make a Good PetYes! Certain species of geckos can make wonderful pets, and some species can be handled quite frequently. Leopard geckos in particular are frequently kept as pets.Gecko CareDifferent gecko species require different levels of care. Geckos typically require a 10-20 gallon aquarium, and can stray from their heat source in too large a space. The aquarium should have a screen lid to provide adequate ventilation and support the light fixture. It is best to heat one end of the cage, so the geckos have a temperature gradient to choose from. Your geckos should be provided with insects for food, and vitamins to maintain their health.Behavior of the GeckoGeckos are active at night, though there are species that forage during the day. Geckos are incredibly vocal reptiles, and will frequently make chirping, clicking, or barking sounds. These noises can be used to establish territory or search for a mate.Reproduction of the GeckoAfter mating, female geckos lay eggs in dark, damp locations, where they seem to prefer leaves and bark as substrate for their nests. Most species lay just one clutch of eggs per year, but some species can reproduce more frequently.Beliefs, Superstitions, and Phobias About the GeckoIn Costa Rican cultures, geckos are considered a symbol of good luck. The basis of this belief is in logical thought rather than superstition, as a gecko-free home may have been treated heavily with toxic pesticides. There are so many amazing types of geckos that it can be hard to decide which species you want as a pet. In fact, one of the most common questions we get from our readers is regarding what type to choose!

So to make things easy, we put together this helpful list to make your decision easier. It covers all of the best types of pet geckos, with handy information about each.

Let’s begin!

Mediterranean House Gecko

Lovingly referred to as the moon gecko, this pint-sized reptile is a nocturnal species. They are most-active a couple of hours after midnight. Like other night-dwellers, they’re also attracted to light and will hand around sources in hopes of catching wandering food!

The Mediterranean house gecko is sporting tan-colored skin and black spots. Some specimens have splotches of purple, too. All lizards have lidless eyes and long, tactile digits that help them navigate the world.

As their name would imply, this type of gecko is native to the Mediterranean region. Their natural distribution is widespread, preferring to stick close to coastal areas with plenty of places to shelter.

Thanks to their popularity in the trade, the Mediterranean house gecko is frequently bred in captivity. They’re readily available in most countries around the globe. The species likes to keep a low profile and is naturally resistant to pesticides. As a result, wild populations are thriving!

Leopard Gecko

Leopard geckos are, by far, one of the most popular species in the trade. Docile and easy-going, they’re a fantastic pet for herpetology enthusiasts of any skill level. Plus, they don’t require massive enclosures to stay happy.

The body of the leopard gecko is tannish-yellow. Several black or brown spots cover the base color, creating a familiar pattern that’s reminiscent of the powerful feline.

Interestingly enough, leopard geckos don’t have the rounded toe pads that other types of geckos do. As a result, you won’t find them climbing the walls of your enclosure.

Another unique trait is their eyelids. Most types of gecko species lack discernible eyelids, so it’s a distinct characteristic that makes for a very emotive lizard!

Leopard geckos are quite easy to care for, making them a great choice for beginners. They require very little in terms of decorations. They prefer rocks and small logs in lieu of massive climbing branches. The reptiles are very accepting of most foods, too. They prefer insects like crickets and grub worms.

Yellow-Headed Day Gecko

This eye-catching gecko is a member of the day gecko family. They’re the smallest in the subgroup. But, they’re certainly one of the most identifiable, too.

This pet gecko species is brightly colored, featuring hues of vibrant yellow on the head. Light brown spots line the lower back while energetic turquoise covers the lower back and tail. The colored details come to life thanks to the flattened shape of the body.

In terms of behavior, these tiny creatures are very active! They’re diurnal and take advantage of all the time and space they have. This gecko species does best in a vivarium filled with plants and natural decor. Their coloration pops in natural-looking environments.

Not only that, but they find more activities to stay occupied.

Yellow-headed day geckos are best appreciated through the glass. They’re a lot more fragile than some other types of gecko species. With their rather skittish behavior, frequent handling is something you should avoid.

White-Lined Gecko

White-lined geckos are a lively species with a well-defined pattern. Most of the body is dark tan, green, or brown. But strong white lines accent their frame, creating a severe look that stands out.

While not as temperamental as some other types of geckos, white-lined geckos are still capable of biting. They are agile escape artists and will quickly flee the scene if you try to hold them. If they feel threatened, don’t be surprised if they try to bite!

This species is one that you should not handle unless it’s completely necessary. They prefer to be observed through the safety of their enclosure’s glass.

In terms of environment, white-lined geckos like things natural and lively. A mix of live plants, vines, and climbing branches are a must. A habitat that mimics their native land makes them feel more secure, which may help to keep aggressive and anxious behavior at bay.

Gargoyle Gecko

Take one look at the gargoyle gecko, and their trade name will suddenly make sense! The medium-sized pet gecko features splotchy skin with touches of gray, black, brown, and white. Subtle accents of orange, yellow, and red are possible, too.

The triangular-shaped head is prominent. The most defining feature on the head is the eyes! Large and bulbous, the eyes provide a somewhat menacing appearance. They’re usually gray in color and feature a vertical slit, which only pushes the statuesque look even further.

Don’t let the intimidating looks of this reptile fool you. It’s actually quite peaceful and doesn’t mind occasional handling from humans. They don’t like it when you constrain them. But if you allow them to crawl on your hands freely, they will enjoy the experience.

The only time you’d have to worry about aggression is in the presence of other gargoyle geckos. This species can get territorial. Even females are known to spar if they feel like another reptile is encroaching on their space.

Gold Dust Day Gecko

Measuring only four to six inches long with their tail, the gold dust day gecko is a manageable species. They don’t require a ton of space and are relatively easy to care for (many consider them to be very beginner-friendly).

Enclosures don’t have to be massive. However, you should provide plenty of height. These types of geckos are big climbers and prefer to live in heavily-decorated spaces with a network of climbable surfaces. You can include large cork branches, thin vines, and everything in between.

All that said, you can get a bigger habitat if you want to. Unlike other types of geckos, gold dust day geckos don’t get overwhelmed or anxious in bigger spaces. They can adapt well to virtually any habitat you provide.

One thing you should avoid, however, is housing two males together. This species is wildly territorial and will fight to the death if given a chance. You can pair males and females together, but make sure you have a large enclosure to give each one their own space.

Crested Gecko

Another hugely popular species in the pet trade, the crested gecko is found all over the place. At one time, the species was thought to be extinct. But a rediscovery in New Caledonia resulted in a revival!

Today, they are one of the most beloved pet gecko species. Thanks to their gentle nature and hardy demeanor, they make great pets for reptile lovers young and old.

Crested geckos are available in a wide range of colors. Most are muted, featuring neutral tones of brown and tan. Though, more vibrant hues are possible, too.

The most defining feature of the crested gecko is its crest. Starting at the top of the head, the crest usually extends down to cover a portion of the back. The crest is fringed as well, creating a spiky appearance.

African Fat-Tailed Gecko

Native to arid environments of West Africa, the African fat-tailed gecko is an interesting species to own. It’s not as well-known as some other common types of pet geckos. But, these creatures have a lot to offer!

When it comes to temperament, these guys are pretty tame. Once they get comfortable in their new home, they will develop a sense of trust. At that point, they will enjoy handling. Many will even respond to your calls and visual cues!

All that said, Male African fat-tailed geckos can get very aggressive with each other. They are territorial and should never be kept together. This species does fine on its own. Or, you can house two females with a single male.

The African fat-tailed gecko is available in several morphs. Despite the skin color they carry, all specimens will have the signature bulbous tail. It stores fat for energy. They can lose it during a spar, but it can regrow with time.

Golden Gecko

Nocturnal and naturally suspicious of humans, the golden gecko is not as common as other types of geckos. They can be a handful to care for if you don’t have the right know-how and patience. But if you put in the work, these reptiles can be a rewarding pet!

Covered in yellow gold color, males are the more vibrant specimens. Most are uniformly colored, but you might also see some lizards with splotches of black on the back. Females aren’t as lustrous as males, but they may have hints of green.

As mentioned earlier, golden geckos aren’t big on handling. There are a couple of reasons for this. The first is their general anxious demeanor. These reptiles are fearful and may resort to biting if you try to force-handle them.

Some may even drop their tail!

Another issue is their delicate skin. The skin is prone to ripping, which makes handling risky.

Golden geckos can get comfortable over time and become more receptive to light handling. But even then, it’s better to err on the side of caution for their safety.

Chinese Cave Gecko

This mystical reptile is rare and highly sought-after. They are native to China and reside in caves throughout lowland rainforests. Most are found on the Island of Hainan.

Chinese cave geckos have adapted well to their unique lifestyle. They’re nocturnal and feature dark-colored skin to blend in with their cave dwellings!

This type of gecko has a body that’s mostly purple. Spots of black cover the back. Meanwhile, prominent stripes of yellow wrap around the body and tail! The bright red eyes add the finishing touch.

Of course, you can’t judge a book by its cover. It looks scary and intimidating, but the Chinese cave gecko is shy as they come. They are rather skittish and anxious at first, but bites are rare.

Once they get more comfortable, you can start building some trust. With a bit of resilient “training,” these pet lizards will learn to stay calm when handled.

As a nocturnal species, don’t expect to see much of them during the day! They spend the daylight hours in hiding, only to come to life at dusk.

Chahoua Gecko

The chahoua gecko is a master of camouflage. In the wild, they spend most of their time clinging to dry trees. Thanks to their bark-like coloration, they blend in effortlessly!

Most of the body is covered in varying shades of brown. A few darker lines here and there mimic the look of tree bark. Even the eyes are subtle, taking on a nearly identical color as the rest of the body.

As you can probably guess, chahoua geckos are arboreal. They need tons of climbing surfaces to stay happy and healthy. A tall enclosure is a must, too.

Chahoua geckos are surprisingly receptive to handling. Tolerance and overall temperament can vary from one lizard to the next. But, this species is very adaptable and can learn to stay calm with the right training.

As babies, they are little balls of energy! Younger lizards are very active and require a bit of work to keep under control.

Frog-Eyed Gecko

Frog-eyed geckos have a distinct look that differentiates them from other types of geckos. They’re sporting large, bulbous eyes and a noticeable round head. This species doesn’t have the triangular head like most types of geckos, resulting in today’s moniker.

This lizard is native to dry shrubland. Some even live in the open desert. They come from the Middle East and Asia. Most of the specimens in the trade today are wild-caught.

Thanks to their wide distribution, there’s a lot of variety in terms of appearance. These guys don’t have any prized morphs, but subtle differences in their coloration reflect locality. As a result, the frog-eyed gecko is a favorite among collectors.

Keeping pet frog-eyed geckos healthy is pretty easy. Simple desert-style enclosures and a healthy diet of insects is all they need. They aren’t picky and will eat just about any insect you provide! Provide plenty of variety and some much-needed powder supplements, and they should do just fine in captivity.

Leachianus Gecko

The Leachianus gecko is a species you might see under many different names. It’s sometimes called the New Caledonian giant gecko. Additional smaller titles exist based on location and culture, too!

Whatever you call it, there’s one thing that separates this species from all others: Its size. The Leachianus is the largest living member of the gecko family. Adults can get as long as 17 inches.

Needless to say, caring for this species can be a handful. They require well-crafted homes with plenty of space. Leachinaus geckos are climbers, so vertical space is a must!

The good news is that these lizards are relatively peaceful. They prefer to spend their days blending in with their surroundings and relaxing.

Aggression can occur in some situations. When they are unfamiliar with other pet geckos, they may become territorial. Only keep bonded pairs together!

The same aggression can happen if you try to handle them too much. They’re not crazy about handling and may struggle to free themselves if you try to force it.

Tokay Gecko

With its beautiful coloration, tokay geckos are a species that many herpetology lovers fall in love with instantly! They are adorable creatures covered in vibrant colors. The main color is usually gray or light blue. But, spots of eye-popping orange, red, yellow, or green add tons of visual interest.

Beautiful looks aside, tokay geckos aren’t the easiest species to care for (they are not a pet for beginners). The reason for this is their temperament! Despite their adorable appearance, tokay geckos are notoriously territorial!

They fight all the time! Two males will fight to the death. Even seemingly innocent pairings may result in the occasional spar. During a fight, the geckos can drop their tails and experience a bevy of serious injuries.

You have to be careful about keeping more than one together. Keep a watchful eye and address aggressive behaviors as soon as possible.

As for handling, it’s all about trust. This type of gecko will bite you. They have small pointed teeth, so bites are painful. Tokay geckos can become docile and accept handling sessions as they get older, but it’s still risky.

Flying Gecko

Endemic to the jungles of Southeast Asia, the flying gecko is not a species you see very often. They are arboreal creatures that spend most of their time in the treetops. As their name would suggest, these lizards can “fly” from one tree to the next.

They’re sporting flappy skin, which catches the wind with every leap. Like a natural wingsuit, it helps the lizard sail to its next destination.

When it comes to appearance, flying geckos are very distinct. In addition to the floppy skin, they have large webbed feet! The feet provide even more control in the air.

The skin is brown and splotchy, making them master camouflage artists. The varying shades of brown blend in with tree barking, helping them disappear in natural environments.

Flying geckos are not a species you should handle. Not only are they skittish, but their skin is delicate and prone to injuries.

Satanic Leaf-Tailed Gecko

Check out this one-of-a-kind gecko species! Native to the mountainous rainforests of Madagascar, the satanic leaf-tailed gecko is the ultimate trickster! Its body looks like dead leaves, allowing it to hide and evade predators.

Don’t let the lizard’s name turn you off. The colorful moniker simply describes its appearance.

The head of this lizard is triangular in shape. However, subtle details push that “leaf” narrative even further! You might see horn-like protrusions around the dome and eyes.

Speaking of which, satanic leaf-tailed geckos often have red or white eyes with a signature vertical slit. Pair that with the thorny look of the head, and you have a scary-looking lizard!

The body of the gecko is just as convincing as the head. The crescent-shaped center mass features a subtle texture that mimics the veins of a leaf. Meanwhile, the fanned tail looks nearly identical to fallen foliage!

This type of gecko is truly a sight to behold. If you can get your hands on one, the satanic leaf-tailed gecko is sure to become a prized part of your collection.

Giant Day Gecko

Giant day geckos are beautiful and full of life! They measure about 12 inches long when fully grown. They’re not the biggest out there, but they still require large enclosures to stay healthy.

Arboreal by nature, giant day geckos need tons of climbing space. Thanks to their girthy size, you have to make sure that the branches and vines you use are beefy enough to support them!

These lizards are stunning. They feature vibrant jewel-toned green coloration with accents of red and yellow. Like most types of geckos, they feature padded toes that are built for climbing!

Giant day geckos are flighty and anxious. They aren’t big on handling, so it’s best to leave them be. If you attempt to force handling on them, you may fall prey to their unique defense mechanism.

When threatened, these lizards can let their soft skin slough off! This unique behavior lets the gecko slip away when feeling stressed.

Which Type Caught Your Eye?

Now that you know all of the best types of geckos you can keep as a pet, it’s time to pick your favorite.

Endangered Species

Other than their adhesive feet and lasting fame from a series of car insurance commercials, you probably don't know a whole lot about geckos. And yet this category of more than 1,100 species of lizard is filled with fascinating surprises. Delve into the world of the geckos and learn how they stick to ceilings, fly through trees, change color, and even call to each other with "barks."

1. Geckos' Amazing Toes Help Them Stick to Any Surface Except Teflon

The clingy toe pads of geckos are a major inspiration of biomimicry.

nico99/Shutterstock

One of their most famous talents is their ability to scurry along slick surfaces — even glass windows or across ceilings. The only surface that geckos can't stick to is Teflon. Well, dry Teflon. Add water, however, and geckos can stick even to this seemingly impossible surface! They do this through specialized toe pads.

Contrary to popular belief, geckos don’t have “sticky” toes, as if covered with glue. They cling with incredible ease thanks to nanoscale hairs, known as setae, that line every toe in huge numbers. Taken together, the 6.5 million setae on a single gecko can reportedly generate enough force to support the weight of two humans.

This fantastic adaptation of geckos has inspired scientists to look for ways to mimic this cling-ability, improving everything from medical bandages to self-cleaning tires.

2. Geckos' Eyes Are 350 Times More Sensitive to Light Than Human Eyes

Geckos have incredible eyes adapted for hunting at night.

Sebastian Janicki/Shutterstock

Most geckos species are nocturnal, and they are particularly well-adapted to hunting in the dark.

According to a 2009 study of the helmet gecko, “Tarentola chazaliae, discriminates colors in dim moonlight when humans are color blind. The sensitivity of the helmet gecko eye has been calculated to be 350 times higher than human cone vision at the color vision threshold. The optics and the large cones of the gecko are important reasons why they can use color vision at low light intensities.”

While we would hardly be able to make out color at all in dim moonlight, geckos can go about their business in what is, to them, still a colorful world.

3. Geckos Are Able to Produce Various Sounds for Communication, Including Barks, Chirps, and Clicks

Geckos have more to say than you might think.

reptiles4all/Shutterstock

Unlike most lizards, geckos are able to vocalize. They make clicks, chirps, barks, and other sounds to communicate with fellow geckos.

The purpose of the sounds could be to warn away competitors from a territory, to avoid direct fighting, or to attract mates, depending on the species and situation. But if you ever hear an odd chirping in your house at night, you might just have a gecko as a guest.

4. Some Species of Geckos Have No Legs and Look More Like Snakes

Some species in the gecko family lack legs.

Shutterstock Premium/Shutterstock

There are upward of 35 lizard species in the Pygopodidae family. This family falls under the clade of Gekkota, which includes six families of geckos. These species — all of which are endemic to Australia and New Guinea — lack forelimbs and have only vestigial hind limbs that look more like flaps. The species are usually called legless lizards, snake lizards or, thanks to those flap-like back feet, flap-footed lizards.

Like other species of gecko, pygopods can vocalize, emitting high-pitched squeaks for communication. They also have stand-out hearing, and are capable of hearing tones higher than those detectable by any other reptile species.

5. Most Geckos Can Detach Their Tails and Regrow Them

Geckos can ditch their tails as a strategy for escaping predators.

Matt Jeppson/Shutterstock

Like many species of lizard, geckos are able to drop their tails as a response to predation. When a gecko is grabbed, the tail drops off and continues to twitch and thrash about, providing a great distraction that might allow the gecko to escape from a hungry predator. Geckos also drop their tails as a response to stress, infection, or if the tail itself is grabbed.

Amazingly, geckos drop their tails along a pre-scored or “dotted line,” so to speak. It's a design that allows a gecko to lose its tail quickly and with minimal damage to the rest of its body.

A gecko can regrow its dropped tail, though the new tail will likely be shorter, more blunt, and colored a bit differently than the original tail. The crested gecko is one species that cannot regrow its tail; once it's gone, it's gone.

6. Geckos Use Their Tails to Store Fat and Nutrients for Lean Times

This leggy guy is a lined flat-tail gecko.

reptiles4all/Shutterstock

Losing a tail isn't a favorable event for a gecko, not only because it's an energy-intensive process to regrow a whole tail, but also because a gecko stores nutrients and fat in its tail as a protection against times when food is scarce.

Because of this, for many species a plump, well-rounded tail is a good way to gauge the individual gecko's health. Depending on the species, a thin tail might indicate starvation or illness.

7. Geckos Can Live a Long, Long Time

Geckos range in life span depending on the species, but many will live around five years in the wild. Several species that are popular as pets, however, can live quite a bit longer.

In captivity, a well-tended gecko can live between 10 to 20 years. Leopard geckos average between 15 to 20 years, though the longest lived individual is recorded at 27 years old.

8. Most Species of Gecko Don’t Have Eyelids, So They Lick Their Eyes to Clean Them

If you didn't have eyelids, you might resort to this solution, too.

Ian Schofield/Shutterstock

Perhaps one of the oddest facts about geckos is that most species lack eyelids. Because they cannot blink, they lick their eyes to keep them clean and moist. (Well, technically, they're licking the transparent membrane that covers the eyeball.)

9. Geckos Are Masters of Color

Find the gecko! Some species of gecko stand out with bright colors while others blend perfectly into their surroundings.

Shutterstock Premium/Shutterstock

It’s not only chameleons that can change color to match their surroundings. Geckos can, too. What’s more, they can blend into their environment without even seeing their surroundings!

In studying Moorish geckos Domenico Fulgione and his team discovered that it isn’t their vision that the geckos use to blend in, but rather the skin of their torso. They sense, rather than see, their surroundings to camouflage themselves, using light-sensitive proteins in the skin known as opsins.

Other species of gecko are particularly adapted to blend in with their habitat based on their skin patterns, which make them look like lichen, textured rock or moss, such as the mossy leaf-tailed gecko, the Wyberba leaf-tailed gecko pictured above, or the satanic leaf-tailed gecko, pictured below.

10. The Satanic Leaf Gecko Perfectly Mimics Dead Leaves

The satanic leaf-tailed gecko is one truly bizarre lizard.

Ryan M. Bolton/Shutterstock

Speaking of, this species is worth discussing, since few geckos are so incredibly well adapted to look exactly like a leaf — and a demonic leaf, at that! This species of gecko looks identical to dry leaves found on the forest floor or even among branches, right down to the veined skin and the insect-nibbled notches.

Endemic to Madagascar, the species relies on this uncanny resemblance to dead leaves to escape the detection of predators. To complete the masquerade, satanic leaf-tailed geckos will even hang from branches to look like a leaf curling away from a stem.

Ultimately, the satanic leaf-tailed gecko is a stand-out creature that you’d be hard-pressed to locate!

11. Some Geckos Can Glide Through the Air

A gliding gecko uses its webbed skin to 'fly' from tree to tree.

NeagoneFo/Shutterstock

The flying gecko, or parachute gecko, is a genus of arboreal gecko species found in Southeast Asia. While they aren’t capable of independent flight, they get their name from their ability to glide using the flaps of skin found on their feet and their flat, rudder-like tails.

The flying gecko can glide up to 200 feet (60 meters) in a single bound, despite measuring only about 6 to 8 inches (15 to 20 cm) in body length.

These geckos, while skittish, are relatively popular in the pet trade.

12. The Smallest Gecko Species Is Less Than 2 Centimeters in Length

Geckos vary in size, but the most diminutive of species can fit on a dime. The Jaragua sphaero, or dwarf gecko, is one of the world's smallest reptiles. This and another gecko species, S. parthenopion, measure just 0.63 inches (1.6 cm) in length from snout to tail. The small gecko has an equally small range, as it's believed to be limited to only the Jaragua National Park in the Dominican Republic, and Beata Island.

C#使用Gecko实现浏览器 - 知乎首发于C#学习笔记切换模式写文章登录/注册C#使用Gecko实现浏览器曦远Gecko就是火狐浏览器的内核啦,速度很快,兼容性比.net内置的webbrowser高到不知哪里去了。使用Gecko首先要下载一堆依赖库,主要是Skybound.Gecko和xulrunner。(这里就不提供下载链接了,搜索一下就有了,需要的话可以发邮件向我索取。)在C#中的使用也很简单。1.添加Skybound.Gecko.dll的引用2.初始化xulrunner Xpcom.Initialize(Environment.CurrentDirectory + @"\xulrunner");

//xulrunner下载后解压出来是一个文件夹,初始化时就要把这个文件夹的路径传进去

3.创建Gecko对象 GeckoWebBrowser gecko = new GeckoWebBrowser();

gecko.CreateControl();

gecko.NoDefaultContextMenu = true; //禁用右键菜单

gecko.Dock = DockStyle.Fill;

this.Controls.Add(gecko); //添加到窗口中

Common tokay gecko

Gekko gecko, Carolus Linnaeus, 1758

(In Thai: ตุ๊กแกบ้าน, took gaeh baan)

The tokay gecko (Gekko gecko) is a nocturnal arboreal gecko, ranging from northeast India, Bhutan, Nepal, Bangladesh, throughout Southeast Asia, Philippines to Indonesia and western New Guinea. Its native habitat is rainforest trees and cliffs, and it also frequently adapts to rural human habitations, roaming walls and ceilings at night in search of insect prey. Increasing urbanization is reducing its range.

The tokay gecko is known as a hokkeng in Chakma, takshak in Bengali, hankkok in Manipuri, tuko in the Philippines, tokkae in Malaysia, tokek in Indonesian/Javanese, tắc kè in Vietnamese, kokkek in Zomi and ตุ๊กแก {{IPA|in Thai, Sawk-khe in HMAR and awke in Mizo for its characteristic vocalizations.

Physical characteristics and behaviour

The Tokay Gecko is the second largest Gecko species, attaining lengths of about 11 - 20 cm for males, and 7 - 19 cm for females, with weights of only 150 – 400 g. They are distinctive in appearance, with a bluish or grayish body, sporting spots ranging from light yellow to bright red. The male is more brightly colored than the female. They have large eyes with a vertical slit pupil. Eyes are brown to greenish brown and can be orange or yellow.

Males are very territorial, and will attack other male Tokays as well as other Gecko species, as well as anything else in their territory. Females lay clutches of one or two hard shelled eggs which are guarded until they hatch. Tokay Geckos feed on insects and small vertebrates. Their strong bite is needed to crack the shell of hard cockroaches that live in the rainforests. They are also extremely strong climbers and their foot pads can support their entire weight on a vertical surface for a long amount of time without any effort. Compared to other gecko species, the Tokay has a robust build, with a semi-prehensile tail, a large head and muscular jaws; though common in the pet trade, Tokays are reputed to be capable of inflicting a painful bite, making them ill-suited for inexperienced keepers.

Call

Their mating call, a loud croak, is variously described as sounding like token, gekk-gekk or poo-kay where both the common and the scientific name (deriving from onomatopoeic names in Malay, Sundanese, Tagalog, Thai, or Javanese), as well as the family name Gekkonidae and the generic term gecko come from. The call is similar to the call made by Gekko smithii (Large Forest Gecko).

The gecko's call is also responsible for a slang name given to it by U.S. soldiers during the Vietnam War: the fuck-you lizard.

Conservation

Tokay geckos are culturally significant in many East Asian countries. Regional folklore has attributed supernatural powers to the gecko. Examples of such myths are the belief that they are harbingers of good luck, that they can see into the future, and that they are the descendants of dragons.

The Tokay gecko is also an ingredient in Traditional Chinese medicine known as Ge Jie (蛤蚧). Tokay geckos are in high demand herb believed to tonify kidney (yang energy), nourish kidney essence, tonify lung, and relieve cough and dyspnea. These beliefs are not substantiated by medical science. They remain highly sought after in in China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Vietnam, Malaysia, Singapore and other parts of Asia with Chinese communities, to the point where unscrupulous merchants have taken to modifying monitor lizards with prosthetics to pass them off as colossal Tokay gecko specimens.

The tokay gecko is quickly becoming a threatened species in the Philippines due to indiscriminate hunting. Collecting, transporting and trading in geckos without a license can be punishable by up to twelve years in jail and a fine of up to Php 1, 000, 000.00 under Republic Act 9147 in addition to other applicable international laws. However, the trade runs unchecked due to the sheer number of illegal traders and reports of lucrative deals. Chinese buyers and other foreign nationals are rumored to pay thousands of dollars for large specimens, because of their alleged medicinal value or as commodities in the illegal wildlife trade.

Tokay geckos are frequently traded for medicinal purposes in Vietnam and China.

Tokay geckos are naturalized with breeding populations in South Florida.

Subspecies

Two subspecies are currently recognized.

Unless you live under a rock, you have likely seen a gecko at one time or another. Geckos are popular pets because they are small, easy to care for, and quite unique. In fact, these small creatures are so unique that they warrant an entire article dedicated just to their fascinating and fun facts.

To learn 43 fascinating and fun facts about geckos, read on.

The 43 Gecko Facts

The 14 Facts About Gecko Anatomy

1. Geckos quite literally have sticky fingers.

These allow them to stick to any surface as long as it’s not Teflon.

2. Tiny hairs are what cause them to stick.

Even though geckos’ sticky fingers look like the work of glue, the geckos stick due to microscopic hairs.

3. They have light sensitivities.

Geckos’ eyes are super sensitive to light. In fact, they are 350 times more sensitive than human eyes.

4. Geckos can detect colors.

Geckos have the ability to distinguish between different colors even when there is so little light that humans are essentially colorblind.

5. Most geckos do not have eyelids.

Even though geckos have great eyesight, most do not have eyelids. Instead, they use their tongues to clean off their eyes.

6. They can make sounds when they want to.

Geckos have the ability to vocalize, such as by making clicks, barks, and chirps, although the creatures tend to be very quiet.

7. Not all geckos have legs.

There are some species that have no legs and almost look like snakes. However, they are different from snakes in that they can vocalize, hear wonderfully, and can detect different tones that snakes cannot.

8. Some geckos can glide through the air.

Certain species of geckos have flaps of skin around their feet and tails so that they can glide through the air.

9. The smallest gecko is tinier than some bugs!

The smallest gecko is not even 2 centimeters long. It is native to the Dominican Republic and Beata Island.

10. Geckos are the smallest lizard.

The two smallest types of geckos are the smallest types of lizards, too.

11. Scientists can easily determine if a gecko is diurnal or nocturnal by looking at the gecko’s pupils.

Nocturnal geckos have vertical pupils, whereas diurnal geckos have round pupils.

12. Light can pass through their ear canals.

If you flashlight through one of the gecko’s ears, the light will continue out through the other ear.

13. Geckos shed their skin very frequently.

Some species shed their skin as frequently as every 2 weeks.

14. Geckos can replace their teeth.

Geckos can replace all 100 teeth in a period of 3 to 4 months.

The 5 Facts About Gecko Reproduction

15. They make noise for a few different reasons.

Even though geckos primarily make noise to defend their territory, they also click to attract a mate.

16. The gestation period can be VERY long.

A female gecko can be pregnant for years before laying her eggs.

17. Eggs are usually laid out of sight.

Female geckos almost always lay their eggs inside leaves or bark.

18. Geckos are among some of the longest hatchlings.

Even though geckos are considered relatively small lizards, their hatchlings are surprisingly long in comparison to other lizards.

19. Some types of geckos are parthenogenic.

This is a fancy word that means females can reproduce without mating with a male. It is because of this trait that scientists believe geckos have been able to populate the entire world, though the trait does come with some downsides.

The 11 Facts About Gecko Survival Tactics

20. They can have long lifespans.

Geckos are hardy reptiles because they can live to be 20 years old. Some geckos have even lived to be nearly 30.

21. Their main form of defense is sound.

Geckos often protect their territory from one another through their unique vocalizations.

22. They can choose to lose their tail.

Gecko species are able to drop their tails to distract predators, and many can even grow these tails back. However, some geckos will be able to drop their tail but not grow it again.

23. You can detect where their tail will disconnect.

You can easily spot where the gecko will drop its tail by looking for a score of spotted lines. This spotted line is where the tail will break off from the body.

24. Geckos will eat a tail they have shed.

If a gecko survives after shedding its tail, it will often go back to see if it remains. If it is still there, it will eat its tail for nutrients because of the next fact.

25. Tails hoard nutrients.

Whenever times are robust in terms of food, geckos store extra fat and nutrients in their tails that they can use during the tough times.

26. Geckos can change color.

Many geckos can change their colors to match their surroundings, much like a chameleon. They can even do this without seeing their surroundings.

27. Tails vary between breeds.

The satanic leaf-tailed gecko has such a unique tail that it looks like a dead leaf.

28. Geckos have a strategy to always land on their feet.

Whenever a gecko is falling, it twists its tail at a right angle so that the animal lands on its feet. It only takes 100 milliseconds for geckos to direct their tail in such a way.

29. Geckos primarily only eat bugs.

This classifies them as insectivores.

30. They eat other smaller creatures, too.

Even though geckos are considered insectivores, they are known to eat other creatures if they’re small enough to do so.

The 13 Other Fun Facts About Geckos

31. There are hundreds of gecko breeds.

In fact, there are over 1,000 types of geckos.

32. Some geckos cannot blink.

Of the thousands of geckos, they are divided into only two species. One species can blink and the other cannot.

33. The gecko’s sticky fingers inspire inventors!

Geckos’ sticky fingers have actually inspired scientists to find new ways to create sticky products, such as tires and medical bandages.

34. Geckos live worldwide.

Geckos can be found on every continent around the globe except Antarctica.

35. Geckos call nearly every habitat home.

This includes rainforests, mountains, and even deserts.

36. The gecko has been a mascot of GEICO since 1999.

Though the company has never claimed what sort of gecko the mascot is.

37. You can find gecko species on all parts of conservation classifications.

Some gecko species are ranked as least concern whereas others are considered critically endangered.

38. The largest gecko was believed to be the Kawekaweau, which is no longer in existence.

There was only one specimen found of this species, and it was found in stuffed form inside a museum in France. It is believed that this gecko was native to New Zealand, but it died out during the 19th century during colonization.

39. Their colorful skin holds an impressive lizard record.

Geckos are considered the most colorful type of lizard in existence.

40. Their names may be inspired by an Indonesian word.

It is believed that the name “gecko” comes from the Indonesian word gēkoq, which was used to imitate the sound geckoes make.

41. Leopard geckos are very common.

The most popular gecko to own as a pet is the leopard gecko.

42. Most geckos are nocturnal.

Even though geckos can be diurnal or nocturnal, the vast majority are nocturnal.

43. Geckos love human homes and owners.

Unlike many reptiles, geckos thrive around humans, likely because they are small and feast on a variety of insects common to human households.
